Recipe: Sunflower-Fig-Pear Hot Cereal

I made this the other morning, and it was divine. Seeds are preferable to nuts for pitta (the summertime element), hence the sunflower seeds. You'll notice this bowl is not a huge breakfast. Breakfast is meant to be the meal where we break the fast of the night of sleep and we want to do that gradually with nurturing foods getting our digestive energy ready for a large satisfying lunch. Don't worry that this recipe will leave you hungry. I guarantee it won't. Enjoy!

1/4 c whole wheat farina
1/2 pear chopped
2 dried figs chopped
1/8 t cinnamon
1/8 t cardamom
1 c water
1-2 T sunflower seeds
rice or almond milk

In a small pot dry roast farina, spices and chopped figs for 2-3 minutes. Add water. Stir and bring to boil, then down to simmer. Cover. Stir occasionally over next ten minutes adding more water if needed. Add pear, stir, leave for one or two more minutes. Serve with sunflower seeds and milk of choice on top. YUM!
  • Vata: Substitute sweet berries for the pear. Add a teaspoon of ghee to toppings.
  • Pitta: perfect!
  • Kapha: Omit figs. Substitute kamut, buckwheat or millet for farina. Once cooked grain is cooked, top with teaspoon of honey.
