Local loves: Sajen JAMU Ginger-Turmeric Beverage

At the Farmer's Market at the Ferry Building today, I went by the La Cocina stall (www.lacocinasf.org) and this incredible looking drink caught my eye along with the text "Turmeric", not a word you see often outside of Ayurvedic cookbooks. Turmeric is one of the most important spices I use in my kitchari, and I consistently hear more and more amazing things about this root (see below). After reading the pamphlet about the company and product, I bought a JAMU and it was yummy with a kick of ginger! In addition to giving my body an incredible boost with the drink, I contributed to a local business; JAMU is made in the La Cocina kitchen in the Mission District!

About JAMU: (From the JAMU website)
Our JAMU's main ingredient is turmeric delicately blend with other root spices, leaves, barks, fruit, and sweetened with natural sugar such as agave. Other main ingredients in other JAMU flavors are fresh turmeric, ginger, wild ginger, lesser galangal, and temulawak (curcuma xanthorrhiza).

In June 2008, The New York Times called turmeric the "superstar of spices"

The modern medical community is keen to uncover the health benefits of turmeric. Turmeric contains high level of antioxidants, higher than blueberries and promegranate combined.

Scientists have begun looking at curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, to learn its powerful antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties.

Medical scientists at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center have found that turmeric may help alleviate symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, ulcerative colitis, and improve cognitive performance. Studies suggest that turmeric may help prevent cancer.

Researchers at National University of Singapore recently concluded that turmeric may boost brain power and shows promising evidence of slowing down the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.

Researchers at Harvard Medical School have looked at curcumin as one of the three anti-HIV compounds that inhibits the long terminal repeat sequence of HIV.
