Recipe: Simple Oatmeal

I find breakfast is the easiest meal to make at home, and therefore a great opportunity to add some ghee to my day. With oatmeal especially, I love that it's quick and simple, and yet so satisfying and nurturing. Today I went to my mom's after yoga this morning, and made us this yummy oatmeal. There are so many variations that can be taken with this recipe. (more to come) Play away & enjoy!

Serves 2

2 t ghee (clarified butter)
2 dashes each: ground ginger, ground cinnamon, all spice
1 dash each: ground cloves, cardamom
2/3 c rolled oats
1 2/3 c water
1/2 c dried fruit (dates & raisins used here)
>1/4 c almonds, chopped or sliced
fresh ground flax seeds
milk for topping

In a medium-sized pot, put ghee and spices on stove over medium heat. Stir for 2 minutes. Add oats, water, and dried fruit. Bring to boil, then simmer, stirring occasionally until oats are soft and dried fruits start to plump. Serve with almonds, flax & milk.
  •  Vata: Excellent! Add almonds in with oats, water & fruit.
  • Pitta: Excellent! Extra dash cinnamon. Only one dash ginger.
  • Kapha: Good. Reduce ghee to 1 1/2 t. Extra dash ginger. Add dried fruit on top at the end, rather than while cooking. Use soy milk instead of cow's milk.
