I love the bulk departments at Rainbow Grocery and Whole Foods. It's the perfect opportunity to try out new things in small quantities. I bought some whole wheat farina (stone ground wheat) the other day and found a recipe on Fran's House of Ayurveda (franlife.blogspot.com). It was delicious! Wheat & coconut pacify pitta and vata. This recipe becomes appropriate for kapha too, just substitute kamut (millet or buckwheat) for the farina. *pictured with Everyday Detox tea by Traditional Medicinals with fresh mint leaves.
Adapted from Fran's House of Ayurveda blog: 'Excellent Breakfast'
Serves 1.
1/4 c whole wheat farina
2 dates
1 apple, chopped
1 T shredded coconut
couple drop of vanilla
1 1/2 c water
maple syrup to taste
Add 1 cup fresh water to farina in a medium sauce pan. Bring to a boil and simmer for 15 min. Add remaining ingredients and 1/2 c water and cook 10 minutes longer or until farina is fully cooked. Top with maple syrup.
- Vata: use stevia instead of maple syrup.
- Pitta: use prunes instead of dates.
- Kapha: use Kamut (instead of wheat), stevia and prunes. Reduce coconut to 1 teaspoon.

Yummy :)
