Recipe: Warm Date Shake

Rasayana: a rejuvenating therapy or practice.

This warm shake is a perfect nourishing easy delicious drink to make for oneself. Only the busiest of days could have kept me from blogging for so long, and I find myself in need of food that will give me a sense of well-being and sustenance. Dates are fantastic!! And the spices in the shake aren't added just for taste; they too have excellent health benefits. Milk is the vehicle of many ayurvedic medicines as it is here. This drink is especially rejuvenating if taken alone first thing in the morning and one waits two hours before eating.

Below I've listed some of the benefits of dates & spices from Dr. Lad's Ayurvedic Cooking for Self-Healing:
  • Dates: balance all doshas, but to be used in moderation by kaphas.
    • Energizing. Nourishing. Bring vitality to body, mind & spirit. Good for: healing pain, anemia, sexual debility, chronic fatigue syndrome, morning sickness, palpitations, and teething pains.
  • Cardamom: decreases vata & kapha, increases pitta.
    • Good for: cough, breathlessness, burning urination, hemorrhoids, digestion, sexual debility, bleeding disorders, nausea, cavity prevention. Also great to add to coffee to support adrenal glands.
  • Cinnamon: decreases vata & kapha and can increase pitta in excess.
    • Good for: digestion, toxic conditions, improving circulation, helps prevent heart attacks, common cold, cough, & congestion, sinus headache, diarrhea, asthma.
  • Nutmeg: decreases vata & kapha, increases pitta.
    • Good for: digestion, cough, insomnia, pain relief, headache, diarrhea, nausea, morning sickness, arthritis.
3 whole Dates, soaked in water overnight & drained with seeds removed (Medjool variety is best)
1 cup whole milk
pinch cinnamon, nutmeg and cardamom

Combine ingredients in blender and liquefy. Pour into a small saucepan and heat until boiled once then remove from heat. Serve warm. Sip and enjoy.
  • Vata: great!
  • Pitta: good! omit the nutmeg
  • Kapha: ok. make each spice two pinches instead of one
